Coaching Practice - Coaches Asynchronous Collaborative Community (Whassat?)
As a business psychologist, director, hr professional and coach, I have to achieve so MANY hours of continuous professional development (cpd) every year just to retain my professional practising certificates.
This year I counted and kept track of more than 96 hours of cpd! (Not counting the life coaching certificate, degree in computer mending and my thousands of hours spent coaching people)
From 'first hand' experience as CPD Advisor for the Midlands (for the Institute of Personnel & Development), I know first-hand just how hard it is for people to find the time to do it!
So MANY excuses: There's always "Too much", that you have to do, "People to see, places to go". There is also 'resentment', I have got to say, caused by the 'corporate-type-prices' for cpd trainings - often set by 'Born-Again' capitalists.
How can sole practitioners or smaller organisations afford it? They are all so strident too.... They'd say: You "MUST do this", and "You must do that."
Don't you just wish - they MUST take a running jump...?
How can you build a professional practice and manage your practice more successfully in an increasingly competitive marketplace, AND 'keep the wolf from the door'?
The answer is ....
Learn from your friends and colleagues in your Mastermind class! Who better to learn from than people who have already built their successful practices in bricks and mortar and on the web?
Well you've got to SEE the technology to believe it! It is SO elegant and wikidly addictive!
Then I thought, wouldn't it be great if we had our own MASTERMIND coaching community, where we could learn from each other, how to build and maintain our own successful coaching practice using all new media, technology and networks?
Wouldn't it be great if that community believed in contributing and helping each other build coaching programmes, launch coaching services, make passive incomes with news, views, trews and cpd?
So I mentioned it to a few of my friends and colleagues who are coaches and they SNAPPED my hand off. "Let me at it? Where is it, Can I play? When do we start? Will you invite me? How do I reserve my place? Can Maureen join? (Maureen? Who's Maureen?) Will you take apprentices? What about an elite 'SWOT' team of top european coaches? (Or should that be 'SWAT'?)
So we are HAVE and ARE developing all these good things AND a forum where coaches can talk together, analyse each other's web and product offerings, talk over issues, get a mentor, be a mentor, learn how to make money, learn new methodologies, borrow free web tools, donate tools, tips and techniques, 'get' the latest, attend classes and generally develop themselves professionally in a safe, secure environment.
Sound's Cool? No kidding. It is very cool. It is a 'MUST'.

A call today on our Redundancy Hot-Line started us thinking again about the contradictory implications of old legislation - on new rulings on Ageism, due to come into force in October 2006.
Last October when the government started consultation proceedings with stakeholders there was general dismay because there was no promise to cleanly alter existing ageist legislation. And Boy! is there a lot of it.
Did you know that you cannot claim bereavement allowance if you are under 45? Age 44? -You have had it?
Likewise the arrangements for redundancy payments are in age bands. They are already some of the lowest payments in Europe, but currently, if you are over 64 you get even less, over 65 and you get nothing! Learn more about redundancy payments for senior people.
It's as if someone who hated his parents was put in charge of drafting all the legislation and he is determined NOT to change it.
"After all, they'll have other money coming in like pensions, nest eggs and disability benefits - won't they?" Fine Print.
3. Career Change - How to Understand Your Brand
People have become the prime source of competitive advantage in virtually every profession. Competition for the brightest and best will be fierce among the best companies.
They will be on the hunt for knowledge leaders, those candidates who are intelligent, educated, comfortable with technology, global, and well-versed in profitable business operations. Learn More: Change Your Career With A Blog.
Cindy Kraft from Coaching Tips says "Understanding your brand is the foundation of an effective career management strategy and communication plan. If you are currently caught in the vicious and oh-so competitive job search cycle right now, long-term career management may not be your top priority".
Regardless of your present situation, however, she says "Long-term career management is critical to your long-term success." Haven't I been saying this forever?
Understanding your brand … your unique promise of value to a prospective employer … leverages your strengths and thus, positions you as an A-player. Being an A-player though is only the first step. If no one knows about you, why would it matter?
She cites a recent survey by Korn Ferry - 36% of its respondents indicating cultural fit is key in the hiring decision. However, If you don’t know what drives you, how will you know if you will be a fit?
In a job market that is destined to become even more competitive, to clarify this critical tool creates market differentiation and quickly becomes the advantage marshaled by candidates who are, and will be, in high demand by employers. Witness John's influential blog here.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense. Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. - Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; a consultant surgeon fired for helping himself to a second helping of soup; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Nobody was fired for manifest embezzlement and blatant corruption. (Or if they were, they were quickly reinstated.)
Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass the word on; if not, join the majority and do nothing.
Kindest
