How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Career Expert?

To answer this question, its probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting "compelling story" that brought me to where I am today, coaching people like you on exactly how to get the job you want, easily.

That defining moment in my life happened in late 1989. A few months before I had left my job in psychological research and was looking for a new role without much success. I was, in my opinion working a thoroughly professional job search campaign, everyday 9 -5pm.

My postman however was getting longer and longer arms from carrying his sack of 'rejection' letters down the garden path and I had become so familiar with the size and quality of these letters that I could guess what was in them before opening and I was usually right.

One day in the middle of the night, I woke up in a pool of sweat. All I kept saying to myself is, "What have I done?! Why did I leave my well-paying job in research just to struggle to get another job? How will I pay my mortgage, if I don't get a job, fast!?

I tossed and turned, and called my godfather in the middle of the night. He sat quietly listening to me. After I explained everything, he said, "Margaret, if there is one thing I know about you, it's that when you want something, there's nothing that's going to stop you from getting it. So just figure out how you are going to get a job, and then go and do it."

At that very moment, I made a commitment to immerse myself in absolutely everything that had to do with getting a job. I was determined that no one should ever have to go through this and that I would find a better way, if it took me the rest of my life.

I read every book on job hunting strategy, attended every course, every seminar that was available. I read every book on marketing and took every course that was available. I essentially decided to become a mini-expert on how to use networking to get a job. (At the time, there was no such thing as 'networking'.)

Lo and behold within a few months I had got myself a job as a 'Career consultant' with a national organisation who valued my psychology, sales and recruitment skills. I was teaching hundreds of job seekers how to get a job and using every skill I had learnt to make it faster, easier and more fun.

During this process I had an epiphany! The thing that I enjoyed MOST about my job was actually working with each individual to find THEIR dream career.

Soon other professionals in the business heard about my success and they said, "Margaret, How do you get your clients jobs so quickly in less than a month and I am giving mine 'tea and sympathy for a year!?" What am I doing wrong? Can you help me?" I'd give then two or three things to do and told them to come back and tell me how it went. Virtually every time, the career counsellor would come back to me a few weeks later, saying "Hurray! My client got that job!!! A queue was forming outside my office of clients AND their counsellors!

I have since made the commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other people in any industry or occupation at any level get the job of their dreams. Since then I've worked with thousands of private clients, spoken in front of countless groups and have created the job search management suite called CareersNet, that every professional needs to get a better job in record time.

Who are your clients exactly?

I work with people just like you who are really good at what they do; but have never been taught exactly how to attract a job or start a business, so that they ALWAYS attract jobs. That said the professions I've worked with run the whole gamut.

What happens if you haven't yet worked with people in my field?

I have worked with thousands of clients in a wide scope of public and private sector and "independent" industries and my methodology has worked in every field and every nationality. More than likely I have worked with people in your field. Yet I have to share with you that if I haven't, you are NOT at a disadvantage, quite the contrary.

Here is why; people in your field are probably ALL doing the same things to attract new jobs. I'll guess this creates a lot of repetition. What my current and former clients have found exceedingly helpful is that I bring an extremely fresh perspective to their career change process and give them resources they'd never heard of in their field. Because of this, they stand out in an overcrowded marketplace and THEY are the ones who get the jobs.

How are you different from other "Career Coaches?"

Although we will occasionally touch upon time management and other "business coach-y" things, you have me as your Career Agent. I only work with individuals that 'get that idea'. I don't coach people in 'life skills' or 'setting well-formed outcomes', because I'm not a Jack-of-all-trades. I refer this work to other coaches.

What this means is that I am very focused on anything and everything that works for the individual's career. Because my focus is very narrow, what you get with me is no-nonsense, undiluted expertise on what works for career-minded individuals. I've simply become an expert at this stuff, and what's more my clients get great results (and I throw in a healthy dose of compassion, humour and encouragement, which ALWAYS helps!)

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

I ONLY work with people who are absolutely excited and deadly serious about getting that job and ending what I call the "3;00 a.m. sweats," meaning, not waking up in the middle of the night anymore saying "How will I ever get a great job?" It was created for you to put the systems in place within THREE months, that will  help you get all the job you need - not six months or a year, which is the conservative estimate on the traditional time it takes to get a new job.

Being a high achieving go-getter myself, I'm known to work best with other high achieving go-getters who are super-ready to get going and just want to know exactly what steps to take to get a job.

Consider what you'll do with me to be an action learning course. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses anymore, just a very different way of thinking and full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal; more job offers, consistently and in record time.

For what type of professional is this program NOT going to work?

Please know that I'm very selective in whom I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren't suited for this program and won't get the superlative results for which they've signed up for. (It wouldn't be fair to them.)

This Career Design Program is NOT for those who have no money coming in and are absolutely financially desperate, at least not right away. It's been my experience that people in financial crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they are consumed with worry about where they are going to get next month's mortgage payment.)

If you fall within this category, it's absolutely OK. We've all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another. Do three things for yourself.

Get some money coming in with a part-time job at the very least, and then call me. This will take the edge off and provide a little more piece of mind enough to focus on your Career Design assignments and the BIG picture. Once you start seeing the results of our work, you can then start reducing the hours you work at the other job and focus on your career.

Another type of person I won't work with (without exception) is the whiner or the chronic sceptic, as well as individuals who consistently make excuses for not getting their assignments done or challenging every aspect of the program. I gently and respectfully ask that you not call and I hope you understand why. We'll probably just not work well together and I wouldn't want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair?

What exactly is the Career Design Program and what does it include?

Attracting a consistent stream of job and project offers begins with understanding what interests your ideal employer; what their major struggles are and what will make them buy your services. Then it means taking serious action on it. Here's what the Program gets you to do:

1. Make Career Design a Priority

We analyse your past, present and future skills and activities and what makes you 'tick'.

We find out "What is important to you?" and "What you have achieved so far." Once we have a clear idea of "What you are good at?" and "What you love doing, we can start to put a plan together.

We examine when in the day (and how) you are making time for marketing, make room in your schedule, prioritize your daily task lists, schedule in follow up time, put a pause on non-essential "leaks" in your marketing bucket, so you can fully invest yourself in growing your career or business.  Essentially, we clear the decks for what’s most important.

2. Strategize your Unique Positioning

We will examine exactly where you are positioned in the marketplace, what your "compelling story" is, what will motivate prospective employers to work with you, what makes your services unique, who your competitors are, what makes you different from them. We will also spend time with figuring out what you offer specifically in terms of results and benefits to employers.

3. Craft your Personal Profile

Together, we will find out exactly who your ideal employers are: the WHO, WHAT, WHY, HOW of what makes YOU their problem-solver, as well as the best ways to reach them in large numbers and inexpensively.

4. Construct your Compelling Marketing Message

In this section, you will find out how to craft a marketing message, tagline, and elevator speech that grabs attention, making people call YOU as opposed to you chasing after THEM.

5. Package What You Know and Do

We take stock of your services, what you offer, what you know and turn these into irresistible sites, programs, packages and systems that make prospective employers sit up, take notice and want to work with you. We also look at positioning what you offer in your package, how to price your offering so it sells itself and brings you more money than you're currently making.

6. Create PULL Marketing Materials

Here, we will have you see that it doesn't work to PUSH your services and get you to start PULLING your employers in with specific materials and techniques that REALLY SPEAK to them.

7. Get Out There in a BIG Way

We will share with you the crucial know-like-and-trust-factor and start educating your environment and personal advocates in how to send you referrals. We will also examine everything you need to do to get out there getting a job and to stop hiding behind your desk.

8. Create Your Marketing PIE

We will spend considerable time "fishing where the fish are" and putting together an extremely specific plan to reach your ideal employers, using your compelling marketing message, and do this easily and inexpensively. This includes referrals systems, netweaving and strategic alliances. Once that plan is in place and running smoothly, we will add different marketing arms to it to increase your client base consistently.

9. Become a Master of Negotiating the Offer

It won't serve you to put so much effort into marketing and Career Design if you don't know how to negotiate the offer. Here, we take you step-by-very-specific-step through the Soft Close that wins interviews every time. This step alone will start making you more salary than you're making now.

10. Implementing Systems for Consistent Career Action and Results

There is never a time you will stop developing your career completely. The good news is, we will implement true systems to make sure it's never time-consuming or full of effort. The systems we put in place will almost run by themselves and soon, you will be literally picking up the phone and signing up a new employer or project offers that you didn't even know about. How Quickly Can I Expect Results?

Obviously, this depends on how long you've been looking for a job and how much you put into the assignments that we give you. That said, virtually all clients see results within the first couple of months in the form of new job opportunities or new projects, more income, turning more prospective employers into recruiting clients.

How can I Guarantee Myself that I Will Get More Job Opportunities, in Record Time?

Do all of your assignments and fieldwork. Show up for all your coaching calls and group bridge calls. Be totally focused on Career Design for at least a three month period. Understand that it's not a "quick fix," it's not magic and it can take up to a year for you to plant the seeds within your current employment and for those seeds to grow into the fruit that you can enjoy. All my clients who have diligently applied every step of The Career Design Program™ have successfully captured new roles or grown their start up businesses, in much less time than they would have on their own AND have made more money than they've made doing what they do.

Will I Recover the Investment I put into this Coaching Program?

Yes, a resounding Yes! Many clients are excited to report that they were able to cover the coaching investment often in their first month in their new job (and, still pay the rent). How long is the program?

Each program runs in 3-month increments. Why? Based on my experience of working with hundreds of clients over the years, it takes at the very least (3) months for all the strategizing, getting out there, assignments and fieldwork you take to "gel." In past years, we found that clients who stayed for shorter periods of time were certainly getting results (and a new job) right away, BUT were never getting to experience a CHOICE of jobs that comes from doing things consistently and applying systems over a period of time. Their marketing machine never had a chance to get fully primed and working simultaneously to bring in a slew of job offers, consistently. Wanting only the best for you, we now only offer this program in 3-month increments.

Do people ever return?

Yes. People find that to build a career that will sustain its momentum over time, a second wave of coaching is very useful. Several participants become your supportive peer group over as many months as you require. 20 minute laser coaching sessions from me twice a month.

This option is for independent self-starters who want to take consistent action in practice building, strategize, collaborate and brainstorm with other like-minded individuals on any issues or assignments that come up.

Each week, in 20-minute laser-coaching sessions, I will teach you one of each of the steps of Career Design Program™ and give you all the worksheets, scripts and templates you’ll need to get more job offers. Best of all, your peers will give you unlimited feedback and strategy via group discussion. (Past participants have shared that the support and camaraderie experienced in this program has made it truly invaluable in helping them build their business.)

The Executive Coaching Program
One-on-one 3-month private coaching program 4 calls per month, 30 minutes each.


This private coaching program was created for high achieving mavericks who want to move extraordinarily fast in leveraging their career. This is the most popular program and creates the best results, by far.

I have a family and a busy life. Although I want another job badly, I don't have much time to spare. How much time do I need?

If you can even spare one hour a week, you will be able to take just one tiny step a week, or learn one new idea a week, plus a bit of time for reading the recommended books. Know that this approach will take longer than if you throw yourself into it wholeheartedly; however, if you don't ever start, you will never get there. They say every journey starts with a single step and I know, personally, that I'd rather fail miserably at something I tried, than never have given myself the chance to succeed.
